Chapter 49 — The Change They Didn’t Admit
Veeresh noticed it first.
Not in words.
Not in big moments.
But in the small things.
The way Poornima now looked for him in a room without realizing it.
The way her silence didn’t feel like distance anymore—but comfort.
The way she still argued, still rolled her eyes, still called him “Salvatore” with that same attitude…
But stayed closer than before.
And Veeresh… he didn’t hate it.
He liked it.
More than he should have.
Even more dangerous—he was changing too.
The cold edges of Salvatore Dreewan didn’t disappear.
But they softened around her.
He didn’t leave the room when she entered.
He didn’t walk away when she got overwhelmed.
He stayed.
Always.
One evening, it happened again.
Poornima had been fine the whole day. She was talking, laughing slightly with Mrs. Dreewan, even working through restaurant calls.
But then—
Something small triggered her.
A sound. A word. A memory that didn’t fully form.
Her expression changed instantly.
Her breathing became uneven.
Her fingers trembled.
Veeresh noticed in seconds.
He didn’t ask questions.
Didn’t panic.
He simply walked toward her and stood close enough for her to feel him.
“Poornima,” he said quietly.
Her eyes flickered.
Confusion.
Fear trying to rise.
But before it could take over—
Veeresh gently took her hand.
No force.
Just grounding.
“Look at me,” he said softly.
Her breathing stuttered.
Then slowed.
The panic didn’t fully disappear.
But it didn’t grow either.
Because she knew that voice now.
That presence.
Even when her mind couldn’t hold onto memories—
her body still remembered him.
And slowly… she leaned toward him.
Veeresh didn’t hesitate.
He pulled her into his chest.
Her fingers gripped his shirt tightly at first, trembling slightly as her thoughts scattered again.
But Veeresh didn’t move.
Didn’t leave.
Didn’t speak too much.
Just stayed.
Minutes passed.
Her breathing softened.
The tension in her body slowly melted away.
And then—
sleep came.
No tablets.
No medicine.
No escape.
Just peace.
Poornima fell asleep against his chest like it was the only place her mind trusted when everything else became too loud.
Veeresh looked down at her quietly.
Still.
Carefully.
Like she was something fragile the world had already broken too many times.
And for the first time, he didn’t feel like he was holding a responsibility.
He felt like he was holding something that had slowly become his own peace too.
His fingers tightened slightly around her—not possessive, not forceful.
Just certain.
And in that silence, Veeresh realized something he didn’t say out loud—
He wasn’t just protecting her anymore.
He was starting to need her presence just as much as she needed his.
