Chapter 58 — After the Fall

The silence after Poornima left the house felt heavier than any argument.

Veeresh stood in the middle of the hall, still facing the door she had walked out of. The echo of her words—you’re worse than them—kept repeating in his mind, sharper each time.

His father walked toward him, anger already visible in his expression.

“Veeresh,” he said firmly. “What happened?”

Veeresh finally turned.

“She found out,” he said bluntly.

Mr. Dreewan’s eyes narrowed. “Found out what?”

A pause.

Veeresh exhaled once.

“That I married her for revenge… to find who killed Zoya.”

The moment the words left his mouth—

SLAP.

The sound cut through the room.

Veeresh’s face turned slightly to the side, but he didn’t react beyond that.

Mr. Dreewan’s hand was still raised, trembling with anger.

“I told you,” he said sharply, voice breaking with frustration, “I told you not to bring her into this!”

Veeresh stayed silent for a moment.

Then he looked back at him.

“I did at the start,” he admitted.

A pause.

“But when I found the truth… everything changed.”

His father’s expression tightened.

Veeresh continued, voice lower now.

“I didn’t stop because I suddenly became innocent, dad.”

Silence.

“I stopped because she was already in it. Already broken. Already suffering.”

His jaw clenched slightly.

“And I couldn’t use her anymore.”

Mr. Dreewan stared at him for a long moment.

Veeresh’s eyes hardened slightly.

“I wanted revenge before,” he said. “I wanted her family to suffer.”

A pause.

“But not like this.”

His father’s voice dropped, calmer now but still sharp.

“And now? How are you going to fix what just happened?”

Veeresh looked away for a second.

The empty space where she had stood moments ago felt louder than everything else.

Then he spoke, steady again.

“I will.”

His father frowned. “How?”

Veeresh turned back.

“I will bring her back.”

A pause.

“And this time… I won’t let her feel used. Not even for a second.”

Mr. Dreewan studied him carefully.

“And if she doesn’t believe you again?”

Veeresh’s answer came without hesitation.

“Then I will earn her belief again.”

Silence followed.

Heavy. Unfinished.

Because both of them knew—

this wasn’t just about truth anymore.

It was about a woman who had finally reached her breaking point… and a man who had to decide whether he was still her protector, or the reason she broke in the first place.
