Chapter 22: A Quiet Understanding
They both were in the room.
Poornima was standing near the window and looking at the children.
She felt happy seeing Zara with Ajay, Rhea and Ritesh.
A small smile appeared on her face.
Veeresh noticed it.
He looked at the window.
The four children were laughing together.
Ajay was teasing Zara while Rhea and Ritesh joined in.
Veeresh smiled seeing them.
For the first time, all of them looked like one family.
He slowly walked towards Poornima.
She was still watching the children.
Veeresh gently placed his hand on hers.
Poornima looked at him.
Their eyes met.
And Veeresh said,
"I think we can understand each other."
Poornima looked at him quietly.
Veeresh continued,
"I know living in city all your life has been different and now you're married to me."
He paused for a moment.
"And you will stay with me in Rajgarh."
Poornima kept looking at him.
There was something openly possessive in his tone.
Not harsh.
Not demanding.
Just certain.
Strangely, she didn't feel awkward.
She simply listened.
Veeresh smiled faintly.
"I am a bit tough."
That made Poornima's lips twitch slightly.
Then his expression became serious.
"But I am not going to cheat you."
The words immediately caught her attention.
"Nor am I going to leave you."
Poornima's eyes softened.
For years she had carried wounds left by betrayal.
Yet the certainty in his voice felt reassuring.
Veeresh continued,
"I am not giving you time and taking you back to Rajgarh."
Then he added,
"And anything, we will do it together."
For a few moments, neither spoke.
The children continued laughing outside.
The city lights shone beyond the glass.
And the silence between them felt comfortable.
Then Veeresh said,
"We will have one proper wedding in the temple in Rajgarh."
Poornima looked at him.
Still silent.
Still processing everything that had happened.
Veeresh studied her face for a few seconds.
Then a small smile appeared on his face.
"This silence..."
He said softly.
"I will take it as yes."
For the first time since the evening began, Poornima smiled.
And Veeresh smiled back.
Outside the room, four very happy children had absolutely no idea that their biggest plan had actually worked.
To be continued...
