Chapter 25: Differences and Acceptance
After the villagers left, the haveli slowly fell into a quieter rhythm. The noise of greetings, rituals, and conversations faded, leaving only the soft rustle of evening wind outside.
Veeresh and Poornima were finally alone in the room.
The silence between them this time was different. Not unfamiliar, but reflective.
Veeresh sat near the window while Poornima stood for a moment, adjusting the edge of her saree, her thoughts clearly unsettled.
After a while, Veeresh looked at her and asked simply,
“You ok?”
Poornima nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
But then she paused.
Her voice lowered slightly.
“But do you think they will accept me?”
Veeresh looked at her.
She continued,
“I saw some people speaking…”
“Our customs are different.”
“We are both from different traditions.”
Then she hesitated for a moment before saying it directly,
“I am Muslim and you are Hindu.”
The words hung in the air for a second, heavy with everything she was trying not to feel.
Veeresh didn’t react immediately.
He didn’t look shocked.
He didn’t look disturbed.
He only looked at her calmly, as if he had already heard what she was afraid to say.
Then he spoke in a steady voice.
“They are villagers.”
He paused slightly.
“They will talk.”
“That is what people do.”
Poornima looked at him, still uncertain.
Veeresh stood up and walked a little closer, not invading her space, just making sure she could hear him clearly.
“But acceptance here is not given in one day.”
“It is built.”
He looked at her with a calm certainty.
“And you are not here to be approved by everyone.”
A brief silence followed.
Then he added,
“You are here because you are my wife.”
The words were simple, but firm.
Poornima’s eyes softened slightly, though the worry did not completely leave her face.
Veeresh continued,
“Different traditions… different beliefs…”
He nodded once, acknowledging it.
“But we are not living for villagers’ opinions.”
“We are living this life together.”
For the first time in that moment, Poornima exhaled slowly.
The tension in her shoulders eased just a little.
Veeresh looked at her and said quietly,
“Give it time.”
“They will adjust.”
“And if they don’t…”
He paused, then added firmly,
“I will handle it.”
Poornima looked at him for a long moment.
Not fear.
Not doubt.
Just trying to understand him.
And slowly, she gave a small nod.
Veeresh’s expression softened slightly.
The room returned to silence again, but this time it was not heavy.
It was steady.
Like the beginning of understanding between two people trying to build a life in a place where everything around them was still learning to accept it.
