Chapter 29: Understanding Without Words
Poornima prepared tea quietly in the kitchen. Her movements were careful, still slightly new to the rhythm of the house, but steady.
After the tea was ready, she picked up the tray and walked toward where Veeresh was.
From a distance, she saw him talking to someone important. His voice was firm, focused, the kind of presence that made people listen without interrupting him.
Poornima stopped.
She stood there for a second, looking at him, then quietly turned back without saying anything.
She went back to the kitchen.
Veeresh, in the middle of the conversation, noticed her movement from the corner of his eye.
He saw her pause, then leave.
He didn’t stop his discussion, but his attention shifted slightly for a moment.
In his mind, he thought, she might have seen me speaking… and instead of disturbing, she simply went away.
Something about that thought stayed with him even after the conversation continued.
Poornima entered the kitchen again.
The maids looked at her.
She spoke softly, “Breakfast mein kya banate hain yahan?”
One of them replied, “Baisa, mostly simple hota hai. Par sabko alag pasand hai.”
Poornima nodded.
“Thakur sahab kya khate hain?”
The maid smiled slightly. “Unko simple pasand hai. Roti, sabzi, dahi ya halka sa paratha. Zyada heavy nahi.”
She continued, “Ajay sahab jab aate hain toh unko aloo paratha aur chai pasand hai. Rhea ji ko poha aur fruits. Ritesh sahab ko anda aur toast.”
Poornima listened carefully, repeating quietly in her mind as if remembering it.
“Achha… samajh gayi,” she said.
She rolled up her sleeves slightly and began preparing breakfast herself, choosing simple dishes that could suit everyone.
There was no hesitation in her now, only focus. Slowly, she was learning the home not just as a guest, but as someone becoming part of it.
In the courtyard outside, Veeresh ended his conversation and turned back toward the house.
His eyes instinctively looked for her.
And somewhere in his mind, he remembered the moment she had turned away quietly instead of interrupting him.
He didn’t say anything.
But he noticed it.
And that awareness stayed with him as he walked back inside the haveli.
