Chapter 35: A Name, A Place, A Future

Poornima returned to the haveli with her appointment letter safely kept in her file.

The moment she entered, she looked around instinctively.

"Did Thakur sa not come?" she asked.

One of the maids smiled and replied,

"No, baisa. He has not returned yet."

Poornima nodded.

"Alright."

Then another maid said,

"Come, baisa. Let us prepare lunch."

Poornima immediately joined them.

The kitchen no longer felt unfamiliar. The maids had become comfortable around her, and she was equally comfortable with them.

As lunch was being prepared, a few village children wandered into the courtyard with their notebooks.

"Baisa, can you explain this question?"

Poornima smiled.

"Show me."

Soon she was sitting with them, explaining lessons and correcting their work.

The children listened attentively, and the maids exchanged smiles.

The new Thakurain had already become everyone's teacher.

Yet despite being busy, her eyes occasionally moved toward the entrance.

Waiting.

Without realizing it, she was waiting for Veeresh.

It was afternoon when she finally heard the familiar sound of his vehicle entering the haveli.

Poornima immediately looked up.

A few moments later Veeresh walked inside.

The moment she saw him, she frowned slightly.

"You okay?"

Veeresh looked at her.

"Hmm?"

"You look tense."

He shook his head.

"Nothing."

Poornima wasn't entirely convinced but didn't push.

Instead she said,

"Come. Eat lunch."

They sat together for lunch.

Poornima served him dal, rice and sabzi.

Veeresh quietly watched her serving his plate before beginning to eat.

For a few moments neither spoke.

Then Veeresh suddenly asked,

"Poornima, what did you decide about meeting Arhan?"

She looked up.

For a second she was silent.

Then she asked,

"You want me to tell the truth or a lie?"

Veeresh raised an eyebrow.

"Both."

For the first time, a faint smile appeared on his face.

Poornima looked at him.

"The truth is..."

She paused.

"I am not ready to see him."

Her voice had become softer.

"And I don't have anything to talk to him about."

Veeresh listened quietly.

Then she continued,

"And the lie is that I am ready to meet him."

Veeresh smiled.

A genuine smile.

Poornima immediately narrowed her eyes.

"I did not make a joke."

His smile widened slightly.

"I know."

He put down his spoon.

Then said quietly,

"I still want you to meet him."

Poornima looked at him.

Not because he doubted her.

Not because he wanted anything from her.

But because he wanted her free from the weight of her past.

She thought for a few moments.

Then slowly nodded.

"Okay."

Veeresh looked at her for a second before giving a satisfied nod.

And that small reaction made Poornima smile.

A few moments later he asked,

"What happened with the interview?"

Immediately her face brightened.

"It went good."

"Selected also."

Veeresh stopped eating.

Then a smile appeared on his face.

"Good."

Just one word.

But she could hear the pride behind it.

Then he remembered something.

"I also went to the government office."

Poornima looked at him curiously.

Veeresh reached into his file and handed her some documents.

"See."

Poornima took them.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

For a moment she simply stared.

Written clearly on the document was:

Mrs. Poornima Qureshi Thakur

Her fingers gently touched the paper.

A small smile slowly appeared on her face.

Not because of the surname.

Not because of tradition.

But because for the first time in many years she felt like she belonged somewhere.

After lunch they went upstairs together.

The room was quiet.

Sunlight entered softly through the windows.

Poornima was still looking at the document.

Veeresh watched her for a moment.

The smile on her face.

The happiness she was trying to hide.

Then suddenly he reached for her hand and pulled her gently toward him.

Poornima looked up in surprise.

Before she could say anything, he kissed her.

For a second she froze.

Then she smiled against his lips and kissed him back.

There was no fear.

No hesitation.

Only a quiet happiness growing inside her heart.

The kind she had not felt for a very long time.

Later they sat together near the window.

Poornima rested her head on his shoulder.

The document still lay nearby.

The appointment letter.

The updated records.

Pieces of a new life.

Neither spoke much.

They simply sat there.

Comfortable.

Peaceful.

For the first time since coming to Rajgarh, Poornima felt that perhaps she had not only found a new home.

She had found someone willing to stand beside her in it.

And as the afternoon sunlight filled the room, Veeresh and Poornima sat quietly together, looking happier than either of them had expected when this journey had begun.
