Chapter 36: The Closure She Needed

That evening, Veeresh and Poornima left to meet Arhan.

The journey was quiet.

Poornima looked outside the window while Veeresh drove. She knew this conversation had been waiting for years, even if she had never wanted it.

When they reached the restaurant, Arhan was already standing there.

Poornima's fingers instinctively tightened around Veeresh's hand.

Immediately, Veeresh held her hand firmly in return.

A silent reassurance.

A reminder that she was not alone.

They walked inside together.

Arhan noticed them and stood respectfully.

Veeresh looked at Poornima.

"Go ahead. Speak."

She looked at him.

A little nervous.

A little uncertain.

Veeresh gently pecked her lips.

"You can."

Then he added in his usual straightforward manner,

"And if he does anything, kill him. I will take care of it."

Poornima stared at him for a second before laughing despite her nervousness.

Veeresh squeezed her hand.

And somehow that simple gesture gave her courage.

She nodded.

Then walked toward Arhan.

Veeresh moved to another table a short distance away, close enough to see her but far enough to give her privacy.

For a moment, neither Poornima nor Arhan spoke.

Years of history sat between them.

Finally, Arhan broke the silence.

"How are you?"

Poornima looked at him calmly.

"I am doing good."

Then she asked,

"And you?"

A faint smile appeared on Arhan's face before disappearing.

"I am not."

The honesty surprised her.

Arhan looked down at the table for a moment.

Then he spoke.

"I am sorry, Poornima."

She remained silent.

Listening.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Simply listening.

Arhan took a deep breath.

"Before our marriage, Rihanna and I were dating."

His voice carried regret.

"She wanted to tell you."

"But I told her not to."

Poornima lowered her eyes.

The old wound still existed.

But it no longer bled.

Arhan continued.

"We fought."

"We broke up."

"Then our marriage happened."

He looked at her.

"We had children."

His voice became heavier.

"But I couldn't forget her."

Poornima sat quietly.

Arhan continued speaking.

"We reconnected."

"And..."

He stopped.

Ashamed.

"I should have spoken to you."

"I should have told you the truth."

"But I didn't."

The silence that followed felt long.

Arhan finally looked at her.

His eyes filled with regret.

"I am sorry."

The words were simple.

But genuine.

For the first time in years, he wasn't making excuses.

He wasn't defending himself.

He was simply accepting his mistake.

Then he added softly,

"And thank you."

Poornima looked at him.

Arhan smiled sadly.

"You never made the children hate me."

"You never took them away from me."

"They both still respect me."

There was gratitude in his voice.

A gratitude that came from knowing she could have made things very difficult and chose not to.

Poornima looked at him for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

"I have forgiven you, Arhan."

Arhan's eyes widened slightly.

Not because he expected forgiveness.

But because he wasn't sure he deserved it.

Poornima continued.

"I don't want to carry any burden in my heart."

Her voice was calm.

Peaceful.

"And I am happy."

The words surprised even her.

Because they were true.

She was happy.

Not pretending.

Not convincing herself.

Actually happy.

Then she said,

"I did not want to take away your rights as a father."

Arhan looked down.

Ashamed.

Grateful.

Both at once.

"You did wrong to me."

Poornima said softly.

"Not to the children."

"You're still their father."

"And I will never take that away from you."

For a moment Arhan could not speak.

The weight he had carried for years seemed to ease slightly.

Finally he smiled.

A genuine smile.

"Thank you."

His eyes moved toward Veeresh sitting a few tables away.

Then he looked back at Poornima.

"I am happy for you."

Poornima followed his gaze.

Veeresh was pretending to look elsewhere while clearly keeping an eye on everything.

That sight made her smile.

Arhan laughed softly.

"Your husband is a thorough gentleman."

Poornima's smile widened.

There was pride in it.

Quiet but unmistakable.

A few moments later, both stood up.

The conversation was over.

Not because there was nothing left to say.

But because everything important had already been said.

The past had finally been acknowledged.

And released.

As they walked out, Arhan stopped in front of Veeresh.

"Thank you, sir."

Veeresh stood.

Then simply said,

"Take care."

Arhan nodded.

And left.

A few moments later, Veeresh and Poornima walked toward their vehicle.

The evening air felt lighter.

As though a chapter had finally closed.

Before she could get inside, Veeresh leaned forward and kissed her cheek.

Poornima immediately looked around.

"Thakur ji!"

Veeresh looked completely unbothered.

"People are seeing."

He shrugged.

"Let them."

Poornima shook her head, trying not to smile.

But she failed.

And Veeresh noticed.

The drive back to the haveli felt peaceful.

For the first time in many years, Poornima felt free of a weight she hadn't even realized she was still carrying.

Beside her, Veeresh drove quietly.

One hand on the steering wheel.

The other resting near hers.

And as the lights of Rajgarh appeared in the distance, Poornima looked ahead and smiled.

The past was finally behind her.

And her future was waiting at home.
