Chapter 41: The Truth She Couldn't Say
The silence inside the farmhouse had become unbearable.
Veeresh finished eating and walked outside.
The evening air was cool, but it did nothing to calm the frustration building inside him.
He lit a cigarette and stood near the veranda, staring at the fields.
Poornima came out a few minutes later.
She stood a short distance away.
Neither spoke immediately.
Finally, Veeresh broke the silence.
"What happened yesterday night, Poornima?"
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Poornima lowered her eyes.
"Nothing happened, Thakur ji."
Veeresh took a slow drag from the cigarette.
Then looked at her.
"Don't lie when you can't."
His voice became firmer.
"Just tell the truth."
Poornima's fingers tightened around the edge of her saree.
"Nothing happened, Thakur ji."
Veeresh stared at her.
His patience was disappearing.
Since morning she had been avoiding him.
Avoiding conversations.
Avoiding eye contact.
Avoiding him.
And now she was pretending nothing had happened.
His jaw tightened.
Suddenly he asked,
"Did I misbehave with you?"
Poornima immediately looked up.
"No."
"Did I do something wrong with you?"
The question struck her heart.
She looked away.
Wrong?
At least if he had shouted at her.
At least if he had argued with her.
At least if he had done something obvious.
She would have known how to react.
But the wound he had given her wasn't visible.
It wasn't something he could see.
It was a single sentence.
Three words.
I love Janaki.
The memory hurt all over again.
Yet she still replied,
"No."
Veeresh threw the cigarette aside.
His frustration finally broke through.
He walked toward her.
Before she could step back, he gently but firmly pulled her closer.
One arm wrapped around her waist.
Poornima's breath caught.
He looked directly into her eyes.
"Look into my eyes and tell me."
His voice was low.
Demanding the truth.
Poornima could feel the intensity in his gaze.
Could feel the hurt and confusion beneath his anger.
But she couldn't say it.
Not yet.
Not because she wanted to hide it.
Because saying it aloud would make it real.
And she wasn't ready for that.
"Nothing happened, Thakur ji."
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Veeresh kept staring at her.
Trying to find the answer she refused to give.
Then, almost instinctively, he leaned forward.
Wanting to kiss her.
Wanting some sign that things were still normal.
That she was still his Poornima.
But the moment he moved closer, she turned her face away.
The gesture was small.
Almost invisible.
But it hit him harder than any words could have.
Veeresh froze.
Slowly he pulled back.
For a moment neither spoke.
The pain on his face was impossible to miss.
Because for the first time since their marriage, Poornima had turned away from him.
Veeresh looked at her carefully.
Then said quietly,
"If I did not do anything..."
His voice was calmer now.
More hurt than angry.
"...you would not have turned away when I tried to kiss you."
Poornima closed her eyes.
The tears she had been fighting all day threatened to return.
Veeresh took a step back.
"Now tell me, Poornima."
His voice carried no anger anymore.
Only a desperate need to understand.
"What happened?"
Poornima's heart felt heavy.
She wanted to tell him.
Wanted to ask him.
Wanted to know if there was a place for her in his heart that belonged only to her.
But fear stopped her.
Fear of the answer.
Fear of hearing that she was right.
Fear of discovering that she would always be standing in the shadow of a memory.
So she did the only thing she could do.
She shook her head.
And whispered,
"Nothing."
The word fell between them.
And for the first time since they had married, Veeresh looked completely helpless.
Because he knew she was hurting.
He knew he was somehow responsible.
But the woman who had always spoken honestly to him was now hiding behind a single word.
And neither of them knew how much longer that silence could survive before the truth finally broke through.
