Chapter 51: Another Truth Waiting
The ride back from the hospital was quiet.
Not uncomfortable.
Just emotionally exhausting.
Rhea had finally fallen asleep after crying herself tired.
For the first time in days, she wasn't carrying everything alone.
She had her parents beside her.
And that gave her some peace.
When they reached the haveli, Poornima carefully helped Rhea to her room.
The girl lay down and within minutes drifted into a deep sleep.
Poornima gently adjusted the blanket over her.
Her fingers brushed Rhea's hair lovingly.
"My child..."
She whispered softly.
Then quietly walked out of the room.
Veeresh was standing in the corridor waiting for her.
The moment she stepped outside, he looked at her.
There was guilt in his eyes.
A lot of guilt.
"Poons."
She looked at him.
Veeresh took a deep breath.
"I am sorry."
Poornima frowned.
"For what?"
He looked away.
"I decided everything without asking you."
His voice was low.
"I told Rhea we would raise the child."
"I should have spoken to you first."
For a few moments Poornima simply stared at him.
Then she narrowed her eyes.
"Thakur ji."
"Hmm?"
"I will slap you."
Veeresh blinked.
"What?"
She folded her arms.
"You are apologizing for this?"
He looked confused.
Poornima stepped closer.
"We are husband and wife."
Her voice softened.
"We are in this together."
Something in Veeresh's expression changed.
The guilt slowly disappeared.
Replaced by warmth.
Poornima continued.
"If you had decided something for our child, I would have stood with you."
The word our child touched him deeply.
Not your daughter.
Not my responsibility.
Our child.
Their child.
Their family.
Their problem.
Their solution.
Together.
Veeresh's eyes softened.
Without saying anything, he gently pulled her closer.
Poornima immediately knew what he was doing.
"Thakur ji..."
But before she could finish, he captured her lips.
The kiss was not playful.
Not teasing.
It was filled with gratitude.
Love.
Respect.
Thankfulness.
For standing beside him.
For standing beside his children.
For becoming the heart of his family.
Poornima kissed him back just as deeply.
Her hands resting on his shoulders.
For a few moments, neither cared about anything else.
Just each other.
When they finally pulled away, both were smiling.
A quiet smile.
The kind shared by two people who understood each other without words.
Veeresh rested his forehead against hers.
"I am lucky."
Poornima laughed softly.
"No."
"We are lucky."
He smiled.
And for the first time that day, both felt a little lighter.
Meanwhile, inside Ajay's room, the atmosphere was very different.
Ajay sat on the edge of the bed.
Looking unusually serious.
Zara noticed immediately.
"Bhai."
Ajay looked up.
"What happened?"
Ritesh sat beside him.
"You've been quiet since morning."
Even Airav looked concerned.
Ajay sighed heavily.
Then ran a hand through his hair.
"There is something I need to tell Appa and Ma."
The room became silent.
Zara frowned.
"What?"
Ajay looked at the floor.
For a few moments nobody spoke.
Then finally he said it.
"My marriage is ending."
The words hit the room like a stone.
Airav froze.
Ritesh stared at him.
Zara's eyes widened.
Ajay laughed bitterly.
"There is no point hiding it anymore."
His voice carried exhaustion.
Months of exhaustion.
"We have been trying."
"We have been fighting."
"We have been pretending."
"But it isn't working."
Nobody interrupted him.
They simply listened.
Because they could see the pain on his face.
"The divorce process has already started."
Ajay admitted quietly.
The room fell silent.
Zara immediately moved beside him.
Placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Bhai."
Ajay smiled sadly.
"I don't know how to tell Appa."
"Or Ma."
"They have enough problems already."
Ritesh looked thoughtful.
Then shook his head.
"They deserve to know."
Ajay nodded slowly.
"I know."
Zara squeezed his shoulder.
"Tell them."
"When the right moment comes."
"But don't hide it."
Her voice was gentle.
"They love you."
"They will understand."
Airav nodded.
"Zara is right."
Ajay looked at him.
Airav smiled softly.
"You all gave my mother happiness."
His eyes became emotional.
"You gave her a family."
"You gave her a home."
"I will always be grateful for that."
The room grew quiet.
Ritesh smiled.
"You're family too, bhai."
Airav nodded.
"And I am always here."
Ajay looked at all three of them.
For the first time since speaking, he didn't feel alone.
"Thank you."
Zara immediately hugged him.
Then Ritesh joined.
Then Airav.
Soon all four were laughing through their emotions.
A strange little group brought together by two stubborn parents.
Downstairs, Veeresh and Poornima were completely unaware of the conversation happening upstairs.
Completely unaware that another storm was waiting.
Another painful truth.
Another challenge for their family.
For now, they believed the hardest part was over.
Neither knew that very soon, Ajay would place another burden before them.
And once again, Veeresh and Poornima would have to stand together and hold their family through the storm.
