Chapter 58: The Secret She Never Told

A day later, Poornima was discharged from the hospital.

The entire family felt relieved bringing her back to the haveli.

Everyone treated her carefully as if she would break if they weren't gentle.

Rhea refused to leave her side.

Zara kept asking every few minutes if she was tired.

Ajay made sure she ate properly.

Even the maids followed her around.

Poornima smiled at everyone's concern.

But the happiest person was Veeresh.

Simply having her back home felt like a blessing.

That evening, after everyone had settled down, Veeresh brought Poornima upstairs to their room.

"Enough talking to everyone," he said.

"You need rest."

Poornima smiled.

"Ji, Thakur ji."

He helped her sit comfortably on the bed.

For a few moments neither spoke.

The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable.

It was filled with concern.

With unspoken emotions.

Finally Veeresh sat beside her.

His eyes remained fixed on her face.

As if he was still making sure she was truly okay.

"Poons."

"Hmm?"

"You hid such a big thing from me."

Poornima immediately understood what he meant.

Her smile faded slightly.

"Nothing."

Veeresh frowned.

"Nothing?"

His voice was soft but serious.

"The doctor told me your heart has always been weak."

Poornima lowered her eyes.

For a few seconds she simply looked at her hands.

Then she nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Veeresh felt pain in his chest hearing her admit it so casually.

As if it wasn't important.

As if it wasn't something he should have known.

"Since childhood?"

Poornima nodded again.

"Since childhood."

The room became quiet.

Veeresh stared at her.

Trying to understand how she had carried such a burden alone.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Poornima looked at him.

There was no fear in her eyes.

Only honesty.

"Because I never wanted anyone to worry."

Veeresh shook his head.

"I am your husband."

His voice broke slightly.

"You should have told me."

Poornima's eyes softened.

"I know."

Veeresh looked away for a moment.

Trying to control the emotions rising inside him.

All these months.

All this time.

And he had no idea.

He thought about every moment she had smiled through pain.

Every moment she had taken care of everyone else.

While carrying her own struggles silently.

The realization hurt him deeply.

Poornima gently touched his hand.

"Doctor told me long ago that I should avoid stress."

She smiled sadly.

"So I always tried not to get hurt."

Veeresh looked at her again.

"And?"

Poornima's eyes became distant.

As if she was remembering something painful.

"When Arhan cheated on me..."

Her voice became quieter.

"It affected me a lot."

Veeresh immediately tightened his grip around her hand.

Not out of anger.

Out of sadness.

He hated that she had suffered so much.

Poornima continued.

"I trusted him."

"I built my life around him."

"And when everything broke..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I thought I would never recover."

Veeresh silently listened.

Every word felt like a wound.

Not because of Arhan.

Because she had carried that pain alone.

"For months I wasn't myself."

Poornima admitted.

"I stopped smiling."

"I stopped reading."

"I stopped doing things I loved."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"And my health got worse."

Veeresh immediately wiped the tear away.

His own eyes had become moist.

Poornima smiled weakly.

"Eventually I became stronger."

"I learned how to live."

"I learned how to smile again."

She looked at him.

A genuine smile appearing on her lips.

"And then you came."

For a moment Veeresh couldn't speak.

His heart tightened.

Because he knew how much courage it must have taken for her to trust again.

To love again.

To marry again.

Poornima squeezed his hand gently.

"Nobody knows about this."

Veeresh frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"My weak heart."

She smiled faintly.

"Only my parents knew."

"And now you."

The words hit him deeply.

Only him.

She had trusted him with a secret she had carried her entire life.

Veeresh slowly moved closer.

His eyes never leaving hers.

"You should have told me earlier."

His voice was filled with emotion.

Poornima smiled.

"I know."

He shook his head.

"No."

His eyes became wet.

"You don't understand."

His hand moved to her cheek.

"If something had happened to you..."

His voice cracked.

"I wouldn't have survived it."

Poornima's smile disappeared.

Because she knew he meant every word.

There was no exaggeration.

No drama.

Only truth.

Veeresh leaned forward and rested his forehead against hers.

For a long moment neither spoke.

The room was silent except for their breathing.

Finally he whispered,

"From now on..."

"Hmm?"

"No hiding."

Poornima smiled softly.

"Okay."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Veeresh kissed her forehead gently.

Then her eyes.

Then her hand.

As if reassuring himself she was truly there.

Safe.

With him.

His wife smiled and rested her head against his shoulder.

And for the first time since the hospital, Veeresh felt some of the fear leave his heart.

Because Poornima was beside him.

And because now, finally, she wasn't carrying this burden alone anymore.
