Chapter 59: The Fear He Never Knew
The room was quiet.
The evening breeze entered softly through the balcony doors.
Poornima was resting against the headboard while Veeresh sat beside her.
His hand never left hers.
Ever since the hospital, he had become even more protective.
As if looking away from her for a moment would make her disappear.
For a long time he remained silent, thinking about everything she had told him.
Finally he asked softly,
"How did it happen, Poons?"
She looked at him.
"My heart condition?"
Veeresh nodded.
Poornima smiled faintly.
A sad smile.
One she had learned to live with years ago.
"I was five years old."
Veeresh listened carefully.
"When other children used to run and play, I couldn't."
Her eyes became distant as she remembered her childhood.
"I would get tired very quickly."
"Sometimes I would sit down while others continued playing."
"I didn't understand why."
Veeresh felt his chest tighten.
He imagined a little five-year-old Poornima sitting alone while other children played around her.
The thought hurt him.
"My parents became worried."
"They took me to many doctors."
She smiled softly.
"Abba and Ammi were terrified."
Veeresh squeezed her hand gently.
Poornima continued.
"After many tests the doctors found out that my heart was weak."
The words felt heavier now than ever before.
Veeresh lowered his eyes.
Listening quietly.
"They told my parents I would have to be careful throughout my life."
"No excessive stress."
"No emotional shocks."
"No extreme strain."
She looked at him.
"The doctors said anything severe could become dangerous."
Veeresh felt his throat tighten.
All these years.
All these years she had been living with this fear.
And she had never complained.
Never told anyone.
Never asked for sympathy.
She simply lived.
Smiling.
Helping everyone.
Taking care of everyone.
While carrying this burden alone.
Poornima gave a small laugh.
"When I was little, Ammi wouldn't even let me run too much."
Veeresh tried to smile.
But his eyes had become wet.
"I used to get angry."
She smiled at the memory.
"I thought everyone was treating me differently."
"But later I understood."
Her voice softened.
"They were just scared."
Veeresh looked away.
Because now he understood exactly what her parents must have felt.
The fear.
The helplessness.
The constant worry.
He had felt it himself in the hospital.
Just for one night.
And it had nearly destroyed him.
Poornima's fingers gently touched his hand.
"When Arhan cheated on me..."
Her voice became quieter.
"I think that was the worst emotional pain I had experienced."
Veeresh immediately looked at her.
There was no anger in his eyes.
Only sadness.
"I trusted him."
She smiled bitterly.
"And suddenly everything I believed in broke."
Her eyes became moist.
"For months I wasn't okay."
"I cried a lot."
"I stopped eating properly."
"I stopped sleeping."
Veeresh felt pain hearing every word.
Because nobody had been there for her then.
Nobody had held her hand.
Nobody had wiped those tears.
She had survived it alone.
"And now?"
He asked softly.
Poornima lowered her eyes.
"The things those women said..."
Her voice broke.
For the first time.
"I don't know why it hurt so much."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"I know they were wrong."
"I know I didn't do anything."
"But hearing it..."
She closed her eyes.
"It felt like I was becoming a burden in your life."
The words shattered something inside Veeresh.
Immediately he moved closer.
His hand cupped her face.
Forcing her to look at him.
"Never."
His voice was firm.
Strong.
Filled with emotion.
"Never say that again."
Fresh tears gathered in Poornima's eyes.
Veeresh shook his head.
"You hear me?"
She nodded silently.
But he wasn't finished.
"No woman has ever become my burden."
His thumb wiped her tears.
"And you?"
His own voice cracked.
"You are my peace."
Poornima stared at him.
Speechless.
Veeresh's eyes were red.
Filled with emotions.
"When you collapsed..."
He stopped.
The memory alone terrified him.
His breathing became uneven.
For a few moments he couldn't continue.
Poornima immediately held his hand.
"Thakur ji..."
Veeresh looked away.
Trying to control himself.
But he couldn't.
"I thought I was losing you."
The confession came out broken.
Raw.
Honest.
"I have never been that scared in my life."
His eyes filled completely.
"I sat beside you the whole night."
His voice trembled.
"And for the first time I understood how helpless a person can feel."
Poornima's own tears started falling.
Because she could see the fear still living inside him.
Even now.
Even after she was discharged.
He was still scared.
Still shaken.
Still carrying that night inside his heart.
Veeresh slowly placed his forehead against hers.
"Do you know what hurts me the most?"
She shook her head.
"You suffered all this alone."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"Five years old."
He closed his eyes.
"A little girl carrying such a burden."
Another tear escaped him.
"And nobody can go back and protect her."
Poornima's heart broke hearing that.
Because nobody had ever looked at her pain that way.
Nobody had ever mourned for the little girl she once was.
But Veeresh did.
He always did.
He saw her.
Not just the woman.
Not just the wife.
Not just the mother.
He saw the little girl who had suffered too.
Slowly Poornima wrapped her arms around him.
Veeresh immediately held her tightly.
As if he never wanted to let go.
Neither spoke.
Neither needed to.
Because sometimes love isn't in grand words.
Sometimes it is in the way someone holds you after learning your deepest fear.
And that evening, sitting in their room, Veeresh held Poornima like she was the most precious thing in his life.
Because to him, she truly was.
