Chapter 7: Looking Beyond Today
The evening breeze grew cooler as Mahendra and Haji Kareem continued sitting beside Sur Sagar Lake.
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Then Haji Kareem broke the silence.
Haji Kareem: "Mahendra... I know what I'm about to say may sound strange."
Mahendra looked at his old friend.
Mahendra: "Since when have I judged you? Speak freely."
Haji took a deep breath.
Haji Kareem: "I want Poornima to move forward in her life."
Mahendra remained silent, encouraging him to continue.
Haji Kareem: "She's only thirty-three. She has spent the last six years living only for Ayat and Aarhan. Those two children have become her entire world."
He paused, his voice becoming softer.
Haji Kareem: "But a mother should have a life too."
Mahendra nodded thoughtfully.
Haji Kareem: "I don't know how long I will be alive. Allah has blessed me with many years, but no one knows when their time will come."
His eyes turned moist.
Haji Kareem: "The day I'm gone... who will stand beside her? Who will tell her she's not alone?"
Mahendra listened quietly.
Haji Kareem: "I don't want Poornima to spend the rest of her life carrying the burden of my son's mistakes."
He sighed.
Haji Kareem: "She deserves happiness. She deserves respect. She deserves a partner who values her."
After a brief silence, he added,
Haji Kareem: "And Ayat and Aarhan... they deserve to know a father's love. Not the pain of being abandoned, but the comfort of having someone who stands beside them, protects them, and loves them as his own."
Mahendra smiled gently.
Mahendra: "You're still the same, Kareem."
Haji looked at him curiously.
Haji Kareem: "What do you mean?"
Mahendra chuckled.
Mahendra: "You always see life from a different angle."
He continued with a nostalgic smile.
Mahendra: "When we were boys, everyone looked at problems. You always looked for solutions."
Haji laughed softly.
Mahendra smiled warmly.
Mahendra: "Do you know something? Because of you, even I learned to see life that way."
Haji shook his head modestly.
Haji Kareem: "We learned from each other."
Mahendra placed a hand on his friend's shoulder.
Mahendra: "You're not thinking only about today. You're thinking about Poornima's tomorrow, and your grandchildren's future. That isn't strange, Kareem."
Haji looked toward the setting sun.
Haji Kareem: "I pray that, one day, Allah sends someone into her life who loves her, respects her, and embraces Ayat and Aarhan as his own."
Mahendra quietly looked at his friend.
Deep inside, a thought crossed his mind.
Two broken lives.
Two families carrying the weight of the past.
Perhaps... destiny had not finished writing their stories yet.
