Chapter 8: An Unexpected Proposal
The sun was beginning to set over Sur Sagar Lake as Mahendra and Haji Kareem sat quietly, watching the orange reflection shimmer on the water.
Mahendra broke the silence.
Mahendra: "Kareem... may I ask you something?"
Haji smiled.
Haji Kareem: "Since when do you ask permission? Go ahead."
Mahendra hesitated for the first time that day.
Mahendra: "Don't misunderstand me."
Haji's expression turned serious.
Haji Kareem: "I won't."
Mahendra took a deep breath.
Mahendra: "If you don't mind... would you consider letting Poornima become my daughter-in-law?"
Haji looked at Mahendra in complete surprise.
For a few moments, he couldn't say a word.
Haji Kareem: "Your... daughter-in-law?"
Mahendra nodded.
Mahendra: "For my grandson, Veeresh."
Haji leaned back, still processing what he had heard.
Haji Kareem: "Mahendra... this is something I never expected."
Mahendra spoke calmly.
Mahendra: "Neither did I. But after hearing about Poornima, I kept thinking."
He continued,
Mahendra: "Veeresh is a good man, Kareem. He's a responsible father, a man of character, and despite everything he has suffered, he has never stopped caring for others."
Haji listened silently.
Mahendra: "And from everything you've told me, Poornima is a woman of strength, dignity, and kindness."
He smiled gently.
Mahendra: "I'm not looking for a daughter-in-law to run our household. I'm looking for someone who deserves to be treated with love and respect."
Haji's eyes became moist.
Mahendra continued,
Mahendra: "I don't know whether Veeresh or Poornima would ever agree. That decision would always belong to them."
Mahendra: "But if they chose this path themselves, I would welcome Poornima into my family with all my heart."
Haji remained quiet for a long moment before speaking.
Haji Kareem: "Mahendra... your words have touched my heart."
He smiled faintly.
Haji Kareem: "If you had asked me this years ago, I would have refused immediately."
Mahendra looked at him.
Haji Kareem: "Not because of your family, but because I would never force Poornima into another marriage."
He paused.
Haji Kareem: "Today, my answer is different."
Mahendra waited.
Haji Kareem: "If Poornima wishes to remarry... if Veeresh also wishes to remarry... and if both of them accept each other willingly, then I have no objection."
He spoke firmly.
Haji Kareem: "There will be no pressure. No emotional blackmail. Their lives are theirs to decide."
Mahendra smiled with respect.
Mahendra: "That is exactly what I wanted to hear."
Haji continued,
Haji Kareem: "One more thing."
Mahendra: "Yes?"
Haji Kareem: "Whoever marries Poornima must also accept Ayat and Aarhan wholeheartedly. They are not separate from her. They are her heart."
Mahendra nodded without hesitation.
Mahendra: "And whoever marries Veeresh must also accept Yash, Aarav, and Aadhya. They are his greatest responsibility."
The two old friends looked at each other and smiled.
Neither was arranging a marriage.
They were simply hoping that, if destiny ever brought two wounded hearts together, it would be through mutual respect, acceptance, and free choice, never through obligation.
