Chapter 24: The Truth Between Strangers
The silence in the room lingered.
Veeresh stood near the balcony, holding his cigarette. After a moment, he put it out in the ashtray without taking another drag.
He turned towards Poornima.
She was sitting quietly on the sofa, her hands folded in her lap.
Veeresh took a deep breath.
Veeresh: "I think... we should know a little about each other."
Poornima nodded.
Poornima: "Yes."
There was another brief silence before Veeresh spoke.
Veeresh: "I have three children."
He looked at her.
Veeresh: "My eldest son is Yash Rathore. He's seventeen."
He smiled faintly.
Veeresh: "He's quiet and very responsible."
He continued,
Veeresh: "My second son is Aarav Rathore. He's fifteen."
A tired smile crossed his face.
Veeresh: "He's stubborn... but he has a good heart."
He paused.
Veeresh: "And my youngest is my daughter, Aadhya Rathore."
His eyes softened.
Veeresh: "She's twelve years old."
Poornima listened without interrupting.
Veeresh looked down for a moment.
Veeresh: "My marriage with Radhika ended in divorce."
He spoke calmly, without bitterness.
Veeresh: "Things had fallen apart long before the divorce happened."
He sighed.
Veeresh: "The marriage couldn't be saved."
After a moment, he added,
Veeresh: "Whatever happened between Radhika and me... she's still the mother of my children."
Poornima appreciated that he didn't speak ill of his former wife.
Veeresh continued honestly.
Veeresh: "My children are angry with me."
He smiled sadly.
Veeresh: "Especially Yash and Aarav. They think I've moved on too quickly."
He looked at Poornima.
Veeresh: "I don't expect you to become their mother."
His voice was gentle.
Veeresh: "If, one day, they simply respect you... that will be enough for me."
Poornima gave a small nod.
She understood what he meant.
Both of them had entered this marriage carrying responsibilities far greater than themselves.
Tonight wasn't about romance.
It was about two strangers beginning their first honest conversation, hoping that truth and respect would become the foundation of the life they would now share.
