Chapter 2: The Pain Behind His Eyes
The interview had ended.
The television screen faded to black as Devraj Singh picked up the remote and switched it off.
Silence filled the living room.
For a few moments, neither he nor Rukmini Singh spoke.
Rukmini looked toward the dark television screen, her eyes moist.
Rukmini (softly): "Dev..."
Devraj: "Hmm?"
Rukmini: "The whole world says our son has everything."
She paused.
Rukmini: "Power... respect... wealth... success..."
Her voice trembled.
Rukmini: "But he doesn't have a family."
Devraj sighed deeply.
He knew exactly what she meant.
Rukmini: "Ever since Rashmi left him..."
"...the house has never been the same."
She wiped a tear from her cheek.
Rukmini: "She took our grandson to London."
"She doesn't even allow Veeresh to spend time with his own son."
"I don't know what kind of punishment this is."
Devraj leaned back in his chair.
His eyes reflected years of helplessness.
Devraj: "I know."
Rukmini: "Every birthday..."
"Every school function..."
"Every festival..."
"He only sees his son through photographs."
"No father deserves that."
Devraj closed his eyes for a moment.
Devraj: "Veeresh never complains."
"He never blames anyone."
"But I can see the pain in his eyes."
Rukmini looked at him.
Rukmini: "He hides it from us."
Devraj: "He tries."
"But a father knows."
"I've watched him return from London after court hearings."
"He walks into this house smiling."
"He asks about everyone."
"He talks about business."
"And then..."
"He locks himself in his room."
Rukmini lowered her head.
Rukmini: "I once heard him crying."
"He thought everyone was asleep."
"My heart broke that night."
Devraj clenched his fists.
Devraj: "Do you know what hurts him the most?"
Rukmini looked at him.
Rukmini: "What?"
Devraj: "Not losing Rashmi."
"It's losing the chance to watch his son grow."
"He missed his first steps."
"His first day of school."
"His birthdays."
"He wasn't there for any of it."
"He carries that guilt every single day."
Rukmini's tears flowed freely.
Rukmini: "He deserves happiness."
"He has done so much for everyone."
"He never refused anyone's help."
"Why does life keep testing him?"
Devraj gently held her hand.
Devraj: "Life tests the strongest people."
"He built an empire after walking through heartbreak."
"But no amount of success can fill the emptiness of a lonely home."
Rukmini nodded silently.
After a long pause, she spoke again.
Rukmini: "I'm worried, Dev."
"What if he spends the rest of his life alone?"
"What if he never lets anyone enter his heart again?"
Devraj smiled faintly.
His voice was calm but full of faith.
Devraj: "Don't worry."
"Our son may have closed his heart..."
"But one day..."
"Someone will knock on that door."
Rukmini looked at him with hope.
Rukmini: "Do you really believe that?"
Devraj: "Yes."
"I believe God has written someone for him."
"Someone who won't stand behind him because of his success..."
"Someone who will stand beside him during his failures."
"Someone who will understand the silence behind his smile."
"Someone who will love the man..."
"...not the businessman."
Rukmini smiled through her tears.
Rukmini: "I pray that day comes soon."
Devraj looked toward the family portrait hanging on the wall.
Veeresh stood in the center, smiling for the camera.
But Devraj knew that smile was only for the world.
Devraj (softly): "One day, my son..."
"You will come home not to an empty mansion..."
"But to a home filled with laughter."
"And when that day comes..."
"You'll finally stop carrying this pain alone."
Far away, in his penthouse office overlooking the city lights, Veeresh stood by the window.
His phone displayed the latest photograph of his young son in London.
He gently touched the screen.
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
Veeresh (whispering): "Happy birthday, champ..."
"I hope one day... you'll know your father never stopped loving you."
He locked the phone, straightened his shoulders, and walked back to his desk.
The businessman returned.
The broken father disappeared behind another mask.
