Chapter 17: Two Rivals Become Partners

The morning sun cast a golden glow over the magnificent wedding venue in Jaipur.

The mandap was decorated with fresh roses, jasmine, and marigolds. A sacred fire burned at the center as the priests prepared everything for the wedding rituals.

Soft shehnai music filled the air.

Family and friends eagerly waited for the bride and groom.

The Groom Arrives

Veeresh arrived first.

He was dressed in an elegant cream sherwani with subtle gold embroidery and a matching stole.

A traditional safa completed his look.

Aravind adjusted his stole.

Aravind: "Looking handsome, little brother."

Arjun: "Don't smile too much."

"It'll scare the bride."

Veeresh glared at him.

Veeresh: "I'll deal with you after the wedding."

Everyone laughed.

Devraj proudly looked at his youngest son.

Devraj: "Come."

"It's time."

Veeresh took his place in the mandap.

The Bride Arrives

A few minutes later...

Everyone stood as Poornima entered.

She wore a simple yet elegant red bridal lehenga with delicate embroidery.

Her bridal jewellery was graceful rather than extravagant.

The simple mehendi on her hands had darkened beautifully.

Her red chooda shone beneath her dupatta.

She walked slowly beside Raghav and Shirisha.

Veeresh looked up.

For the first time...

He forgot the crowd around him.

She looked beautiful.

Poornima reached the mandap and quietly sat beside him.

Neither spoke immediately.

The priest began the rituals.

The Sacred Puja

Priest: "Both of you fold your hands."

Veeresh and Poornima obeyed.

The priest chanted Vedic mantras while they offered flowers and rice into the sacred fire.

As everyone focused on the rituals...

Veeresh leaned slightly toward Poornima.

In a voice only she could hear...

Veeresh: "Chudail..."

Poornima looked at him from the corner of her eye.

Veeresh (softly): "You look beautiful in red."

A faint blush appeared on her cheeks.

Without looking directly at him, she replied,

Poornima (softly): "Rakshas..."

"You don't look bad yourself."

Veeresh smiled.

It was perhaps the first compliment they had ever exchanged.

Raksha Sutra

The priest handed a sacred thread to Poornima.

Priest: "Beta, tie this sacred thread around the groom's wrist."

Poornima carefully tied the thread around Veeresh's right wrist.

The priest blessed them.

Priest: "May this sacred bond always protect your marriage."

Hasta Milap

The priest gently joined their hands.

A sacred cloth was wrapped around them.

Priest: "From today, you walk through life together."

Veeresh looked at their joined hands.

For the first time...

Neither of them tried to pull away.

Kanyadan

Raghav and Shirisha sat before their daughter.

Raghav's eyes became moist.

He placed Poornima's hand into Veeresh's.

Raghav: "Today, I entrust my daughter to you."

"Take care of her."

Veeresh looked directly at him.

Veeresh: "I will."

Shirisha gently kissed Poornima's forehead.

Tears flowed freely as the priest completed the kanyadan rituals.

Gathbandhan

Rukmini stepped forward with a smile.

She tied the end of Veeresh's stole to Poornima's dupatta.

Rukmini: "May this knot remain strong forever."

The priest nodded.

Priest: "The bride and groom are now spiritually united."

The Seven Sacred Pheras

The priest stood beside the sacred fire.

Priest: "Rise for the seven pheras."

Veeresh and Poornima stood together.

Hand in hand, they walked around the holy fire seven times.

With each phera, the priest recited the traditional vows of companionship, trust, prosperity, family, respect, strength, and lifelong commitment.

By the seventh round...

They were husband and wife in the eyes of tradition.

Mangalsutra

The priest handed the mangalsutra to Veeresh.

Priest: "Groom, please tie the mangalsutra."

Veeresh gently placed it around Poornima's neck.

The black and gold beads rested against her bridal attire.

Sindoor

The priest offered the vermilion.

Priest: "Fill the bride's maang with sindoor."

Veeresh carefully took a pinch of sindoor.

His hand remained steady.

He gently applied it along Poornima's hair parting.

The women around them smiled with emotion.

Toe Rings

Following the family's tradition, silver toe rings were brought.

Veeresh gently placed them on Poornima's feet.

The priest smiled.

Priest: "These complete the traditional wedding rituals."

Varmala

Finally, the floral garlands were brought.

Poornima smiled as she placed the varmala around Veeresh's neck.

Veeresh then placed his garland around her.

The hall erupted into applause.

Flower petals showered over the newly married couple.

Blessings

The priest folded his hands.

Priest: "The marriage is complete."

"You are now husband and wife."

Devraj and Rukmini were the first to bless them.

Veeresh and Poornima bent to touch their feet.

Devraj placed his hands on their heads.

Devraj: "May you always stand beside each other."

Rukmini smiled warmly.

Rukmini: "May your home always be filled with peace and laughter."

They then sought blessings from Raghav and Shirisha.

Raghav embraced Veeresh before blessing them both.

Raghav: "My daughter is precious."

Veeresh nodded respectfully.

Veeresh: "I know, Uncle."

Raghav smiled.

Raghav: "From today..."

He looked at Veeresh with affection.

Raghav: "Not 'Uncle.'"

"It's Appa."

Veeresh smiled softly.

Veeresh: "Yes... Appa."

Poornima looked at them with moist eyes.

For the first time in many years...

The rivalry that had begun in school had transformed into a relationship that would now be tested not in classrooms or competitions, but in the journey of marriage itself.
