Chapter 12 — The Chess Game

The study remained silent after Veeresh's words.

Mr. Qureshi continued to watch his son carefully.

He knew Veeresh well enough to understand that there was always more behind his silence.

After a few moments, Mr. Qureshi finally spoke.

Mr. Qureshi: "How did you plan Rukmini's eloping?"

Veeresh slowly looked at his father.

For the first time that evening, a faint smile appeared on his face.

He leaned back against the chair and folded his arms.

Veeresh: "I didn't make her elope, Papa."

Mr. Qureshi raised an eyebrow.

Mr. Qureshi: "Then what exactly did you do?"

Veeresh gave a quiet chuckle.

Veeresh: "I already knew Rukmini was in love with someone."

His father stared at him.

Mr. Qureshi: "You knew?"

Veeresh nodded.

Veeresh: "She told me herself."

Mr. Qureshi's expression changed.

Mr. Qureshi: "When?"

Veeresh: "When we were sent to speak alone before the wedding."

Veeresh's eyes became distant as he remembered that conversation.

Rukmini had been nervous that day.

She had finally admitted that she loved someone else and did not want to marry Veeresh.

Veeresh had listened to her without anger.

He had understood her situation immediately.

Veeresh: "She was in love with someone else, and she was terrified of what would happen if the family found out."

He paused.

Veeresh: "So I helped her."

Mr. Qureshi looked at him carefully.

Mr. Qureshi: "You helped her escape?"

Veeresh nodded.

Veeresh: "Yes."

There was no regret in his voice.

Veeresh: "But I never told her about my obsession with Poornima."

Mr. Qureshi's eyes narrowed.

Mr. Qureshi: "You had already planned all of this?"

Veeresh smiled faintly.

Veeresh: "I had planned the possibilities."

He leaned forward slightly.

Veeresh: "I knew Rukmini didn't want this marriage. I knew she was in love with someone else. And I knew that if she ever got the courage to leave, she would."

Mr. Qureshi remained silent.

Veeresh continued.

Veeresh: "I simply made sure that when she finally made her choice, the situation would lead exactly where I wanted it to."

His father stared at him.

Mr. Qureshi: "And Poornima?"

Veeresh's expression changed immediately.

There was something almost possessive in his eyes.

Veeresh: "Poornima was always the one I wanted."

Mr. Qureshi said nothing.

Veeresh leaned back again.

Veeresh: "I never told Rukmini about my feelings for her sister. I didn't need to."

He smiled.

Veeresh: "I let her believe that I was simply helping her."

Mr. Qureshi: "And you knew Poornima would become your wife?"

Veeresh looked directly at him.

Veeresh: "I knew."

Mr. Qureshi shook his head slowly.

Mr. Qureshi: "How could you be so certain?"

Veeresh's smile widened slightly.

Veeresh: "Because I knew how the families would react."

He looked toward the window.

Veeresh: "The wedding had already been announced. Everything had already been arranged. Once Rukmini disappeared, there would be only one solution they could consider."

His eyes hardened.

Veeresh: "Poornima."

Mr. Qureshi stared at his son.

Veeresh continued calmly.

Veeresh: "I laid the chess game."

He paused.

Veeresh: "And everything went accordingly."

His father remained silent.

Veeresh: "Rukmini left."

Veeresh: "The families panicked."

Veeresh: "The wedding could not be cancelled."

Veeresh: "And Poornima became the replacement bride."

Veeresh's expression became almost unreadable.

Veeresh: "Exactly as I knew she would."

Mr. Qureshi looked at him for a long moment.

Mr. Qureshi: "You were certain that Poornima would agree?"

Veeresh's expression softened slightly.

Veeresh: "No."

He shook his head.

Veeresh: "I was certain that circumstances would leave her with very little choice."

The words made the room fall silent.

Veeresh looked down for a moment.

He knew exactly what he had done.

He had anticipated every move.

Every possibility.

Every reaction.

Like a chess player planning several moves ahead.

And yet there was one thing he had failed to calculate.

Poornima's pain.

Her anger.

Her dreams.

Her hatred.

He had planned the entire game.

But he had never planned for the possibility that the woman he had craved for five years would look at him one day and say she hated him.

Mr. Qureshi finally spoke.

Mr. Qureshi: "And now?"

Veeresh looked toward the staircase.

His voice became quieter.

Veeresh: "Now the game is over."

He paused.

Veeresh: "Poornima is my wife."

His eyes hardened with determination.

Veeresh: "And I will wait until she chooses to see me differently."

Mr. Qureshi studied his son.

The ruthless politician had planned the chess game perfectly.

Rukmini had moved.

The families had moved.

Poornima had moved.

And Veeresh had won the marriage he had wanted.

But now he was beginning to realize that winning the game had never meant winning Poornima's heart.
