Chapter 2 – The Man He Became

The moment Veeresh stepped inside the Rajawat haveli, Rahul's face lit up with happiness.

Rahul walked toward him and hugged his cousin tightly.

Rahul: "Veeresh! Finally, you came."

Veeresh gave him a small smile and patted his back.

Veeresh: "How are you, Rahul?"

Rahul: "I'm good. And now that you're here, I'm even better."

Veeresh looked around the familiar haveli.

So many years had passed, yet everything still felt strangely familiar.

Rahul suddenly turned toward a young woman standing beside him.

Rahul: "Shreya, come here."

Shreya shyly walked toward them.

Rahul smiled proudly.

Rahul: "Shreya, meet your Chacha."

Shreya looked at Veeresh.

She had heard so many stories about him from her father and grandmother.

The successful businessman who lived in Germany.

The man who rarely came to India.

The quietest member of the Rajawat family.

Shreya folded her hands respectfully.

Shreya: "Namaste, Chacha."

Veeresh looked at her for a moment.

His expression remained calm, but his eyes softened slightly.

He placed his hand gently on her head.

Veeresh: "Khush raho, beta."

Shreya smiled.

Shreya: "Thank you, Chacha."

Rahul watched the interaction happily.

Rahul: "You remember when she was born?"

Veeresh nodded.

Veeresh: "I remember."

Rahul laughed.

Rahul: "You came for only two days and left after barely spending an hour with her."

Veeresh looked at him.

Veeresh: "I had work."

Rahul shook his head.

Rahul: "You haven't changed."

Veeresh didn't answer.

But Kamala, who had been watching him carefully, knew something had changed.

He wasn't the same Veeresh who had left India years ago.

He spoke to everyone politely.

He asked Aravind about his health.

He touched Gayathri's feet and took her blessings.

He greeted the other family members.

He even smiled occasionally when someone joked with him.

But there was a distance in him.

A wall.

Something that hadn't been there before.

Later, Kamala quietly sat beside Gayathri.

She watched Veeresh speaking with some of the relatives from across the room.

Kamala sighed.

Kamala: "Gayathri didi..."

Gayathri turned toward her.

Gayathri: "Hmm?"

Kamala lowered her voice.

Kamala: "He is not like before."

Gayathri looked at Veeresh.

Kamala continued.

Kamala: "He has become so distant."

She paused.

Kamala: "So cold."

Gayathri remained silent for a moment.

Her eyes stayed fixed on Veeresh.

Gayathri: "I noticed it too."

Kamala looked at her sadly.

Kamala: "He used to talk so much with us. He would tell me everything."

Gayathri smiled sadly.

Gayathri: "That Veeresh was a child."

Kamala: "But what happened to my son?"

Gayathri didn't have an answer.

Aravind, who had overheard them, looked toward Veeresh.

Aravind: "Life happened."

Kamala looked at him.

Aravind continued softly.

Aravind: "We don't know what he went through after he left."

Gayathri nodded.

Gayathri: "But whatever happened, he doesn't have to carry it alone."

Just then, Veeresh finished speaking with the relatives.

He walked toward them.

Veeresh: "Maa, Bade Papa, Badi Ma... I'm going to my room."

Kamala looked at him.

Kamala: "Beta, you just arrived."

Veeresh: "I'm tired from the journey."

Aravind nodded.

Aravind: "Go and rest, son."

Veeresh gave him a small nod.

Veeresh: "Good night."

Gayathri smiled warmly.

Gayathri: "Good night, Veeresh."

Veeresh walked upstairs.

His footsteps slowly disappeared down the corridor.

Kamala watched him until he vanished behind the door.

She whispered,

Kamala: "He feels like a stranger in his own home."

Gayathri looked at her.

Gayathri: "No, Kamala."

She smiled faintly.

Gayathri: "He's still our Veeresh."

She looked toward the staircase.

Gayathri: "We just have to remind him that he still has a family."
