Chapter 34 – The Truth He Had Hidden
After lunch, Veeresh took Poornima to a quieter section of the company.
They stopped near a private corridor overlooking the city.
Veeresh was unusually silent.
Poornima noticed immediately.
Poornima: "Veer?"
He looked at her.
Veeresh: "Poons, there is something I never told you."
She waited.
Veeresh took a deep breath.
Veeresh: "But I want to tell you now."
Poornima: "Okay."
He looked away for a moment before finally speaking.
Veeresh: "I'm involved in the mafia."
Poornima went quiet.
Veeresh continued before she could react.
Veeresh: "Singh Industries is my legitimate business. Everything you see here is legal and built through years of work."
He paused.
Veeresh: "But there is another side of my life that I have kept separate from this."
Poornima listened carefully.
Veeresh: "I became involved because of circumstances surrounding my family and the people who came after us. There were threats, conflicts, and things I couldn't simply walk away from."
His voice remained calm, but his eyes carried years of exhaustion.
Veeresh: "I never wanted you to become part of that world."
Poornima slowly reached for his hand.
She held it firmly.
Veeresh looked at her.
Poornima: "Veer..."
He waited for her reaction.
Poornima: "Do what makes you happy."
Veeresh's expression changed slightly.
Poornima continued softly.
Poornima: "But don't do anything wrong."
She squeezed his hand.
Poornima: "Whatever your past is, I don't want you to hurt innocent people or do something that you know is wrong."
Veeresh remained silent.
Poornima stepped closer.
Poornima: "I married you, not just the businessman everyone sees."
She smiled faintly.
Poornima: "I don't expect you to tell me everything today."
Veeresh looked at her with disbelief.
Veeresh: "You're not scared?"
Poornima shook her head.
Poornima: "I'm surprised. Yes."
She paused.
Poornima: "But I'm not going to judge you without knowing your story."
Veeresh's eyes softened.
Poornima suddenly hugged him.
For a moment, Veeresh stood still.
Then his arms slowly came around her.
He held her tightly.
Poornima rested her head against his chest.
Poornima: "You don't have to carry everything alone anymore."
Veeresh closed his eyes.
For years, he had kept that part of himself hidden from everyone.
But now, the woman he had expected to fear him was standing in his arms instead.
Veeresh quietly whispered,
Veeresh: "Thank you, Poons."
She held him a little tighter.
Poornima: "I'm here."
And for the first time, Veeresh felt that perhaps he had finally found someone who could see the darkness in his life without becoming afraid of him.
